Automatic Pipe Bender — DuralBend Atlas BRF Series

We get asked this a lot — “I want fully automatic bending but I don’t need CNC, is there something in between?” And the answer is yes. The DuralBend Atlas BRF is a 3-axis fully automatic pipe bending machine that runs on PLC control instead of CNC software. It does feeding, rotation and bending all by itself: you load the tube and press start. Because it’s PLC based rather than CNC, the price point of this auto pipe bending machine is significantly lower while still giving you hands-free production.

For shops that are currently running semi-auto or manual machines and want to step up to an automatic tube bending machine without the CNC learning curve, the Atlas BRF is really the most logical upgrade path.

How It Works

The machine has three controlled axes: feeding, rotation and bending. Feeding and rotation are both driven by servo motors, which gives you precise positioning on those two axes. The bending axis runs on an AC motor — it’s not servo, but for the bending movement itself you don’t need the same level of precision as feeding and rotation, because the bend angle is controlled by the PLC program anyway. The AC motor provides the torque, the PLC controls where it stops. Simple, reliable, and it works.

Once you program your bend sequence into the PLC — feed length, rotation angle and bend angle for each step — the automatic pipe bending machine runs the entire cycle without operator input. Load the tube, hit the button, and the machine feeds to the first bend position, bends, rotates to the next plane, feeds again, bends again, and so on until the part is done. The operator just unloads the finished piece and loads the next tube.

That’s a substantial difference compared to semi-auto, where the operator is still involved in every cycle. Customers switching from semi-auto to the Atlas BRF report a significant increase in output, especially on parts with four or more bends.

PLC vs CNC — What’s the Actual Difference?

People sometimes assume automatic means CNC. It doesn’t. On our CNC pipe bending machines you get 3D CAD import, bending simulation, Cartesian coordinate programming — the whole software suite. On the auto pipe bender you program the bends manually: you enter feed distance, rotation angle and bend angle for each step on the touchscreen. It’s more like programming a sequence than designing in 3D.

But here’s the thing — for a lot of pipe bending work, that’s all you need. If you know your bend data from a drawing or from an existing part, you just enter the numbers and go. The PLC approach is faster to learn and cheaper to buy and maintain. CNC becomes necessary when you’re dealing with very complex geometries or need to import from 3D models. For everything else this fully automatic pipe bending machine handles it fine.

One Platform, Three Levels of Automation

The Atlas BRF shares its mechanical platform with the Atlas B and Atlas BR ranges — the same heavy frame, DDT direct gear transmission, hydraulic clamp and pressure dies, mandrel extraction and wiper die block. That is a practical advantage rather than a marketing point: tooling is interchangeable across the whole Atlas family, so if you already own a DuralBend machine your existing dies fit the BRF too, and a shop running two Atlas machines side by side keeps one tooling inventory instead of two.

What changes at BRF level is who moves the tube. On the Atlas B the operator feeds and rotates; on the Atlas BR the machine rotates; on the BRF the machine does both and runs the bend as well. The Atlas BRF Range — 6 Models, Ø32 mm to Ø90 mm

Six models in the auto tube bender range, covering tube diameters from Ø32 mm to Ø90 mm. All of them ship with full mandrel support, wiper die and pressure die as standard. Here’s the lineup:

  • Atlas BRF-32 — Ø32 mm capacity. The smallest auto pipe bender in the range — good for furniture tubing, light industrial fabrication and any volume production with thin diameter tubes.
  • Atlas BRF-42 — Ø42 mm capacity. Step up from the 32 when you need a bit more diameter. Popular with handrail and automotive component shops running automatic production.
  • Atlas BRF-51 — Ø51 mm capacity. Probably our most popular automatic pipe bending machine. Handles the bulk of standard industrial bending work without any issues.
  • Atlas BRF-60 — Ø60 mm capacity. Sweet spot for exhaust manufacturing and medium structural work where you need automatic cycle times.
  • Atlas BRF-76 — Ø76 mm capacity. Heavy duty automatic tube bender for industrial exhaust systems, structural steel and handrail production.
  • Atlas BRF-90 — Ø90 mm capacity. The largest auto pipe bending machine in the BRF range. Built for the biggest jobs the platform can handle while keeping full automatic cycle production.

Who Is This Machine For?

Anyone who wants automatic production but doesn’t need CNC. We see these a lot in exhaust manufacturing, furniture production, HVAC, agricultural equipment and handrail fabrication. The Atlas BRF is popular with shops whose operators aren’t trained on CNC programming — the PLC interface is straightforward enough that most people can learn it in a day.

It’s also a smart choice as a second machine. Some customers run a CNC tube bending machine for complex prototypes, then move proven programs to the automatic pipe bender for volume production. CNC handles the engineering, the automatic handles the output.
