Semi-Auto Tube Bending Machines — DuralBend Atlas BR Series

So you need 3D bending capability but a full CNC pipe bending machine isn’t in the budget. That’s a pretty common situation and it’s exactly why we designed the DuralBend Atlas BR series. These are semi-automatic tube bending machines that give you servo-controlled rotation for 3D bends, mandrel support and NC control — basically everything you need to produce complex bent tubes without paying CNC prices.

The way we think about it: the Atlas BR sits right between our standard hydraulic Atlas B range and our full CNC machines. You get more than a basic pipe bender but you don’t need to justify a CNC investment. For a lot of workshops that’s the sweet spot.

What Makes It Semi-Automatic?

The “semi” part is the tube rotation. On a standard hydraulic tube bending machine the operator rotates the tube manually between bends. On a full CNC machine everything is automatic. The Atlas BR gives you servo-controlled rotation — the machine handles the precise angular positioning between bends, but the operator still feeds the tube and initiates each cycle. It’s a good balance between automation and cost.

This matters because 3D bending accuracy depends almost entirely on rotation precision. If your operator is eyeballing the rotation angle on a manual mandrel bender, you’re going to get inconsistent parts. With servo rotation that’s not an issue anymore — the machine hits the same angle every time. Adjustable flip stops on the sides of the machine give you full control over tube positioning, so even complex multi-plane geometries come out right.

The Servo Rotation Axis Is the Whole Point

Mechanically the Atlas BR is the Atlas B platform: same heavy frame, same DDT direct gear transmission, same hydraulic clamp and pressure dies, same automatic mandrel extraction and wiper die block. Tooling is interchangeable between the two, so if you already run an Atlas B your existing dies fit.

What the BR adds is one axis — and it changes what the machine can produce. Rotation between bends stops being an operator judgement call and becomes a programmed value, repeated identically on every part. That is the difference between a machine that can bend a handrail and a machine that can bend an exhaust manifold. Everything else on the specification sheet is there to support that: the flip stops so the tube starts in a known position, the 999 program memory so multi-plane sequences can be recalled, the quick-change tooling so a part family changeover doesn’t eat the time the servo axis just saved you. The complete list is in the Standard Features tab below.

The Atlas BR Range — 8 Models, Ø32 mm to Ø114 mm

Eight models from Ø32 mm to Ø114 mm. All bend up to 190° with full mandrel, wiper die and pressure die as standard. Here’s the lineup:

  • Atlas BR-32 — Ø32 mm x 2 mm, 6 kW, 78°/sec bending speed. Compact machine, works well for furniture tubing and light fabrication where you need 3D bends.
  • Atlas BR-42 — Ø42 mm capacity. Step up from the 32 when you need a bit more diameter for handrails, automotive components or general 3D fabrication work.
  • Atlas BR-51 — Ø51 mm x 3 mm, 10 kW, 42°/sec. The mid-range workhorse. Covers most standard industrial pipe bending applications and it’s the model we sell the most of in this series.
  • Atlas BR-60 — Ø60 mm x 3 mm, 12 kW, 42°/sec. Larger diameter capacity, same speed. Exhaust pipe bending work and medium structural applications.
  • Atlas BR-76 — Ø76 mm x 4 mm, 23 kW, 42°/sec. Heavy duty pipe bender class. 4 mm wall thickness at 76 mm diameter takes real power and this machine has it.
  • Atlas BR-90 — Ø90 mm x 4 mm, 29 kW, 21°/sec. Bending speed drops because of the forces involved, but for industrial applications at this diameter there is really nothing else to compare it to at this price point.
  • Atlas BR-100 — Ø100 mm capacity. Large diameter semi-auto tube bending machine for structural work, shipyards and process piping where you still want servo rotation precision.
  • Atlas BR-114 — Ø114 mm capacity. The largest in the semi-auto range. Built for heavy structural, large exhaust systems and industrial scaffolding work — full 3D bending capability at big diameters.

When Does a Semi-Auto Make Sense?

If you’re only doing 2D bends — meaning all bends are in the same plane — then you don’t need the BR version, the standard Atlas B hydraulic pipe bending machine will do. But the moment you need bends in multiple planes on the same tube, the servo rotation becomes essential. Think exhaust manifolds, handrail systems, frame structures, roll cages — anything where the tube changes direction in 3D space.

We also see customers upgrade to the semi-auto from a manual mandrel tube bender when their rejection rates get too high. Manual rotation is fine for simple parts but once the geometry gets more complex, the consistency just isn’t there. The servo rotation on the Atlas BR solves that problem without requiring you to jump all the way to a full CNC tube bending machine. And if you want the feed automated as well, that is what the Atlas BRF does.

For the price difference between a standard Atlas B and the Atlas BR, the servo rotation pays for itself fairly quickly in reduced scrap and faster setup times. It’s one of those upgrades that’s hard to argue against.
